The Data Is Clear: America's Maternal Mortality Crisis Demands Action
Everyone's talking about healthcare right now—especially with the government shutdown. Our Healthcare Table Talk left us with three facts about the impact on women of color we can't stop thinking about. Did you know?
U.S. maternal mortality rates far exceed those in other high income nations - with the highest toll among Black women (The Commonwealth Fund 2024 Study)
Black women die at 3-4x the rate of White women during and after childbirth (and this rate is as high as 9x the rate of White women in cities like New York)
YET: 80% of maternal deaths can be avoided
And we’re so fortunate to count two amazing organizations in our Flourish community who are working to address maternal care in the U.S.: the Divine Sisterhood Circle (Flourish Impact Partner) and birthFund (founded by friend of Flourish, Elaine Welteroth)
Meet Elaine Welteroth!
Founder of birthFund, Journalist, Author, and TV Host
We want to introduce you to Elaine Welteroth and birthFUND, the organization she founded in 2024 to match individual funders with families in need of quality midwifery care and birth support.
“I have had the privilege of watching Elaine Welteroth grow from a thoughtful and determined young girl into an extraordinary leader whose voice is shaping culture and advancing justice. As a groundbreaking media figure—formerly editor-in-chief of Teen Vogue and bestselling author—Elaine uses her platform to elevate underrepresented voices. Through her work with birthFUND, she is addressing disparities in maternal health by ensuring that mothers, especially those often marginalized, have access to safe and supported birth experiences. I am honored to welcome her insight and wisdom to The Flourish Collective.” - Tony DeGruy, Flourish Executive Board Member
