Altadena: It’s More Than Rebuilding

The Flourish Collective's Impact Partner, Greenline Housing Foundation—named by reclaiming the very "redlines" once used to mark off Black neighborhoods—has mobilized a comprehensive "Rebuild, Restore, Remain" strategy:

  • Emergency Relief Fund providing immediate financial assistance

  • Housing Coordination securing temporary accommodations within the community

  • Rebuilding Support helping families reconstruct their homes

  • Property Preservation purchasing fire-damaged properties from willing Black homeowners to hold in trust, ensuring future development reflects community priorities

"This isn't just about rebuilding structures," explains Jasmin Shupper, Greenline's founder and Executive Director. "It's about preserving the soul of a community with deep historical significance."

The Flourish Collective proudly supports Greenline's mission and have given two grants in the last 12 months and aim to keep giving as much as we can. We are grateful our shared commitment to fostering flourishing in neighborhoods that have faced marginalization for generations.

"Losing everything in the Eaton fire has been a devastating blow, but the outpouring of support, especially from people like Greenline has been a beacon of hope. Greenline’s kindness has lifted a huge weight from our shoulders and gives us the strength to face the challenges ahead." Joe and Lerna

Greenline: Preserving Community Land Ownership After the Fire

Greenline is working to prevent outside investors from acquiring fire-damaged properties in Altadena. Here's how their initiative works:

  • Greenline offers residents who lost homes in the fire an alternative to selling to non-community investors who have already purchased multiple local parcels.

  • If a resident  lost their home and cannot or choose not to rebuild, Greenline will purchase their property at a fair market price while ensuring the land remains dedicated to community use.

  • After acquisition, Greenline holds properties in a land bank and collaborates with community members, local housing organizations, and stakeholders to determine future development aligned with neighborhood needs.

  • This initiative puts "Altadena is Not for Sale" into action by offering homeowners fair compensation while preventing speculative development that could harm the community.

Does your community work to preserve and honor its cultural and racial significance?
